Projects - Transit Facilities
West Mifflin Garage, Comprehensive Garage Modernization Program

Port Authority of Allegheny County

This project consisted of a 70' x 430' major expansion and modernization of the existing transit facility. The expanded facility included a bus-wash facility, tire change area, maintenance area, administrative offices, and a cafeteria for employees.

Tri-State Design performed all civil/site design, all structural design, high bay and low bay lighting and electrical system design. Site work included an extended parking facility, roadway design, drainage and other miscellaneous items of work.

Tri-State also performed construction phase services, which included shop drawing review, trouble-shooting, and construction monitoring.

Port Authority of Allegheny County

This project consisted of a 75' x 400' major expansion and modernization of the existing transit facility. The site is located in a residential/commercial area, which prohibited expansion on three sides of the facility. The remaining site was a steep hillside, making design and construction a major challenge.

Tri-State designed a two-level addition by removing part of the hillside and retaining the earth using closely spaded tieback caissons, 5' away from the existing building. A cast-in-place concrete girder placed on top of the series of caissons served as support for the new columns, as well as the floor beams on one side of the expanded facility. The other side of the floor was supported by steel girders and columns on individual footings supported by caissons. The roof system consisted of cantilever trusses which would support the existing roof. The existing columns were removed. Cantilever trusses closed the 5' gap between the new and existing buildings. Some of the existing column foundations were reinforced using new 25-ton capacity pin piles, thus utilizing the existing foundation for additional loads. The area under the elevated floor was leveled and used for employee parking. A new approach ramp was constructed.

Tri-State also performed all civil/site work to include parking lots, paving, drainage and roadway design, lighting and electrical systems for the facility. Additionally, we performed shop drawing review and construction phase services, including construction inspection.

Port Authority of Allegheny County

This project involved general renovation to meet ADA requirements and maintenance repairs. Tri-State Design performed complete architectural, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering services.

Major structural renovation included removal of a portion of the structural slab over the lower level administrative area. Due to poor original construction, water leakage from the bus washing facility was a constant maintenance problem. After the initial inspection and testing, we recommended replacement of the existing slab and redesigned a two-way slab supported by columns with capital and drop panels to match the existing construction. The facility had to be maintained in operation, so phased construction with appropriate traffic patterns was recommended.

South Hills Village Parking Structure - Bethel Park, PA

Port Authority of Allegheny County

To meet the ever-increasing demand for parking for the transit riders, Port Authority of Allegheny County proposed to build the Park and Ride facility at an estimated cost of $25 million.

This project consisted of the design of a 7-story parking structure to accommodate 2,200 cars at the South Hills Village Transit Station in the Borough of Bethel Park.

The structure consists of prestressed concrete beams and columns supported by a caisson foundation. The structure has two elevators and four stairways; it is easily handicapped-accessible. There is a Kiss & Ride drop off area also.

Tri-State Design performed all electrical, fire and panic alarm systems, plumbing, HVAC and fire protection system designs for this high-profile project. Tri-State was also responsible for assisting in CM work by performing construction inspection of electrical items of work.

Wood-Allies & Forbes-Semple Parking Garages, Pittsburgh, PA

This project consisted of in-depth inspection, analysis, and rehabilitation design of multi-level parking structure.

The existing nine-level parking structures consist of steel frames with post-tensioned, thin concrete slabs. The existing slabs were deteriorated and spalled in certain areas so that the strands were exposed in certain areas. Tri-State performed inspection services and our services also included analysis for the addition of a one-tier portable parking level. Computer analysis using STAAD software was performed to assure that the addition load due to overlays and the addition of one tier did not cause any overstress.

The existing structure was designed very marginally and did not have the reserve capacity for the additional load. Therefore, a thin layer of epoxy overlay with water proofing membrane was recommended for final use.
